NSC recommends cash prizes for team members of ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024 Qualifiers

KATHMANDU: The National Sports Council (NSC) has proposed that the government award a cash prize of NPR 1.3 million to each member of the national cricket team that secured qualification for the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024.

Tankalal Ghising, NSC Member Secretary, announced that during a meeting held on Tuesday under his chairpersonship, it was decided to recommend cash prizes for the players and coaching staff.

Nepal secured its place in the T20 World Cup after a decade by finishing among the top two teams in the ICC T20 World Cup Asia Qualifiers Finals, which took place in Kathmandu on Sunday.

The T20 World Cup 2024 is scheduled to be held in the United States of America and the West Indies in June.

The recommendation suggests providing NPR 1.3 million cash prizes to the 15 players selected for the T20 World Cup, NPR 390,000 to the head coach, and NPR 195,000 to the assistant coaches, managers, and physiotherapists.

During a board meeting of the Cricket Association of Nepal (CAN) held on Tuesday, it was also decided to grant a cash prize of NPR 5 million to the team selected for the T20 World Cup 2024.

Although Nepal participated in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup in Bangladesh in 2014, the team failed to qualify for the subsequent three World Cups.

This time, the ICC organized regional qualifiers rather than global qualifiers. Nepal and Oman, the two teams that advanced to the finals from the Asia region, have secured their places in the T20 World Cup. Nepal secured its spot in the World Cup by defeating the UAE in the semi-final with an 8-wicket victory. However, in the final, Nepal lost to Oman in the Super Over, securing the runner-up position.
