KATHMANDU: The first-look poster and official teaser of the documentary ‘Road to Everest’ have been released, offering audiences a powerful glimpse into an extraordinary journey from sea level to the summit of the world’s highest mountain, Mount Everest.
Built around themes of courage, perseverance, mystery, and the growing impact of climate change on the Himalayas, Road to Everest follows the story of a man in his fifties who challenges age, time, and his own limitations to pursue his lifelong dream of climbing Everest.
Beyond highlighting the mountain’s majestic beauty, the documentary explores the dangers of high-altitude mountaineering, the invaluable contribution of the Sherpa community, the resilience of the human spirit, and the alarming effects of climate change on the fragile Himalayan ecosystem. It presents Everest not merely as the world’s highest peak, but as a symbol of determination, endurance, and hope.
Directed by Nirmal Shrestha, the film features renowned Nepali mountaineers Phurba Tenzing Sherpa and Nima Gyalzen Sherpa. Phurba has summited Everest 18 times, while Nima has climbed Everest 10 times and completed all fourteen of the world’s 8,000-meter peaks. The documentary also includes Binod Gurung, Suraj Gurung, and Nirmal Shrestha, whose personal experiences add depth and authenticity to the narrative.
According to the production team, the Nepal premiere of Road to Everest will be held on 22 August 2026 in Kathmandu, followed by its international premiere on 13 September 2026 in Hong Kong. The documentary will later be screened across Nepal and at various international film festivals and cinemas.
The project is the result of more than two years of research, filming, and production. The story was written by journalist Santosh Acharya and Nirmal Shrestha, while the narration is delivered by broadcaster Bhusan Dahal. The documentary is available in both Nepali and English.
The production team describes Road to Everest as the first Everest documentary created entirely by Nepali filmmakers and technical professionals that captures a complete real-life journey from sea level to the summit without using artificial or computer-generated visuals. Every scene is based on authentic footage, offering viewers an immersive and genuine mountaineering experience.
Produced by the We Will Rise Foundation, the documentary aims not only to inspire audiences but also to promote Nepal’s tourism and raise global awareness about the urgent environmental challenges facing the Himalayas.
The newly released poster and teaser provide an emotional and visually striking introduction to the film, capturing the beauty, danger, and extraordinary determination that define the journey to the top of the world. Road to Everest has a total runtime of 50 minutes.
