KATHMANDU: The Education, Health and Information Technology Committee has initiated discussions with stakeholders to address effects on nursing education arising from an ongoing dispute over the respective jurisdictions of Medical Education Commission and the Council for Technical Education and Vocational Training.

In this connection, the Committee met today with Minister for Education, Science and Technology, Ashok Kumar Rai, Ministry’s secretary Suresh Adhikari, Commission vice-chair Pro Dr Shreekrishna Giri and Council Vice-Chairperson Khagendra Prasad Adhikari.

Likewise, representatives from organizations that lodged complaints with the Commission regarding the implications on nursing education due to the dispute were also present in the meeting, Committee President Bhanubhakta Joshi said the meeting agreed to meet again on Friday.

Minister for Health and Population, Mohan Bahadur Basnet, is to be invited to the next meeting.

The dispute arose with the Commission asserting that medical education including the PCL nursing program should be governed according to the National Medical Education Act-2075 while the Council said its nursing education has long been operating under its own established laws and it should not be intervened by the Commission.
