Koshi Province: Newly-appointed Chief Minister Thapa sworn in

Appoints two ministers -- one each from Nepali Congress and Unified Socialist Party

BIRATNAGAR: Uddhav Thapa, the recently appointed Chief Minister of Koshi Province, was sworn in today (Friday), affirming his commitment to his new role.

The oath of office and secrecy was administered by Province Chief Parshuram Khapung on Friday morning.

Following the oath ceremony, Chief Minister Thapa appointed two ministers in the first phase.

He appointed Kamal Jabegu of the Unified Socialist Party and Pradeep Sunar of the Nepali Congress as ministers.

Thapa’s appointment as Chief Minister came on Thursday, with the backing of the Nepali Congress, Maoist Center, Unified Socialist Party, and Janata Samajwadi Party.

To meet the required number of lawmakers for the Chief Minister’s post, Speaker Baburam Gautam’s signature was also included in the list of lawmakers.

However, despite being appointed as Chief Minister under Article 168, subsection 2 of the Constitution, Thapa faces the challenge of proving himself in the State Assembly within the next 30 days.

To secure his position, he will need the support of the Rastriya Prajatantra Party (RPP).

The coalition parties collectively hold 47 votes in the State Assembly, which constitutes the majority in the 93-member provincial assembly.
