CHITWAN: In the last eight years, 220 rhinos have died in Chitwan National Park (CNP) and its surrounding areas. This is the data from financial year 2015/16 to till date.
CNP officials shared that 64 rhinoceros died of old age and fell from a hill, while 19 rhinoceros died after being trapped in swamps and washed away by floods.
According to the information officer of the park, Ganesh Prasad Tiwari, 51 rhinos have died in eight years of conflict.
He informed that there are 20 rhinoceros from tiger attacks, nine from poachers, eight from electrocution, 12 from illness and disease, three from ditches, five from poison consumption, and 29 rhinos whose cause is unknown.
According to Tiwari, 100 male, and 76 female rhinos have died in the last eight years, while 44 rhinos whose sex has not been identified have died.
Since the financial year 2015/16, the highest number of rhinos died in the park in the year 2019/20, according to the statistics of the office. In that year, 43 rhinos died. Tiwari said that the lowest number of 14 rhinos died in the year 2015/16.
According to Tiwari, 25 rhinos died in the year 2016/17, 26 in the year 2017/18, 26 in the year 2019/20, 33 in the year 2020/21, and 37 in the year 2021/22. He shared that 16 rhinoceros have been found dead so far this year.
According to the statistics of the park, 323 rhinos have died from the year 2008/09 to the year 2022/23. Tiwari said that as the number of rhinos in the park is increasing, the number of them getting into each other and dying of old age is high. He said that the park is conducting various programs in grassland management and water conservation for rhino grazing.
