SC receives writ petition against Citizenship Bill

KATHMANDU: The Supreme Court (SC) has received a writ petition against the recently authenticated Citizenship Bill.

According to SC sources, senior advocate Balkrishna Neupane and Dr. Surendra Bhandari filed the writ claiming it is unconstitutional to verify the bill, though recommended by the Council of Ministers, lying unclaimed for long during the tenure of the-then President Bidya Devi Bhandari.

A preliminary hearing on the writ petition will be held in the Supreme Court on Sunday.

The petitioners claimed that the provisions of the Constitution cited by the President during the verification of the Bill are not related to the verification of the Bill and the verification citing wrong provisions is against the constitutional provisions and legal practices, and deserves revocation.
