EC to provide election symbols to candidates today

KATHMANDU: The Election Commission (EC) is providing election symbols to the candidates who have filed candidacies for the local level elections today.

The candidates who registered nominations on behalf of the political parties on April 24 and 25 will receive the election symbol of their respective parties and those independent ones will receive new symbols, said Shaligram Sharma Paudel, the Spokesperson of the Commission.

All these programs will take place at respective election offices.

The EC had examined the candidacies and looked into the complaints filed against the candidacies before publishing the final-list of the candidates on Friday.

Which party nominated for how many posts?

A total of 79 parties across the country have registered their candidacies for the local elections. Independent candidates have also filed candidacies, according to the Election Commission. Main opposition CPN-UML has given candidatures in most of the seats. It has registered candidatures for 33, 503 posts.

Similarly, Nepali Congress (NC) has fielded candidates for 31,425 posts and CPN (Maoist Center) for 22,279 posts. Likewise, CPN (Unified Socialist) has fielded 11,330 candidates while Janata Samajwadi Party (JSP) has fielded 9,481 candidates.

Loktantik Samajwadi Party (LSP) has fielded 4,761 candidates while, 12,220 people have registered their candidacies as independent candidates.

A total of 152,465 candidates had filed their nominations for May 13 local level election for various 35,221 posts in 753 local units. Many rebel candidates have withdrawn their candidacies.

The local level election is being held on May 13.
