KMC committed to ensuring pedestrians’ rights on footpath: Mayor

KATHMANDU: Kathmandu Metropolitan City (KMC) Mayor Balen Shah said that the metropolis was committed to establishing the right of pedestrians on the road.

Issuing a statement on Thursday, he said the use of footpaths cannot be given for purposes other than walking even during festivals.

Shah’s statement comes at a time when reports have been published on the issue of the footpath.

Mayor Shah mentioned that the metropolis will continue to conduct its activities to establish the rights of pedestrians.

“People have felt that street businesses have been obstructing pedestrians,” the statement said, adding, “Therefore, to establish the right of pedestrians to walk freely, the metropolis will conduct its activities.”

Mayor Shah said, “We also want to make it clear that this program will not be postponed merely due to special festivals or other reasons.”

“Pedestrians have the first right on the road. KMC has formulated its policies and programs to establish it. It is our commitment to improving the lives of citizens by implementing the rights granted by law for the development, improvement and prosperity of the city,” the statement said.
