Four parties in Balkot after ruling coalition fails to forge consensus

KATHMANDU: Leaving Nepali Congress (NC) — the largest party in the House of Representatives (HoR) — aside, other major parties have attempted to forge another coalition in the residence of CPN-UML Chairman KP Oli in Balkot.

While the NC-led ruling coalition is in crisis due to the lack of agreement between the parties on the issue of power sharing in the formation of the new government, the UML has started efforts to build a new alliance with other parties including the Maoist Center.

Maoist Chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal, who left Baluwatar, is holding talks with UML Chairman KP Oli’s residence in Balkot.

Before reaching Dahal, Chairman of Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP) Rabi Lamichhane and Chairman of Rashtriya Prajatantra Party Rajendra Lingden also reached Balkot.

Later Lingden left Balkot and Janata Samajwadi Party (JSP) leader Ashok Kumar Rai reached Balkot.

The UML Chairman Oli, Maoist Center Chairman Prachanda, RSP President Lamichhane and JSP leader Rai held discussion on the latest political development.

Based on Article 76 (2) of the Constitution, President Bidya Devi Bhandari has given time to submit the claim to the Prime Minister till 5 pm on Sunday.

As the deadline for submitting claims to the majority government by forming an alliance between two or more parties is about to expire, the parties have started working to create a different equation by leaving out Congress, the largest party in the House of Representatives.
