EC mulls cutting down election silence period to 24 hours

KATHMANDU: The Election Commission (EC) has begun preparations to reduce the election silence period.

The EC held discussions with political parties on reducing the election silence period to 24 hours from the existing 48 hours on Monday.

All the political parties represented in the federal and province assemblies participated in the discussions.

“We held a discussion on code of conduct, silence period and expenses limit for candidates, among other issues,” UML leader Gangalal Tuladhar said. “We have suggested the EC to reduce the election silence period to 24 hours.”

In the meeting, EC officials expressed dissatisfaction over the flouting of the code of conduct by the parties.

“Everybody should follow the code of conduct strictly. The EC, too, should make unbiased monitoring,” Tuladhar said. “As monitoring by officials cannot be effective, we have suggested using judges for effective monitoring.”

He also said that the parties should also be honest about abiding by the code of conduct.
