KATHMANDU:  One hundred and fifty-seven trucks of garbage have been dumped in the Bancharedanda landfill site amidst protests by the locals.

The garbage was dumped in the Bancharedanda landfill site with the help of security personnel yesterday.

Sarita Rai, head of the environment department under the metropolis, said 157 trucks of garbage were dumped on Tuesday amidst obstruction by locals.

“We dumped 157 trucks of garbage despite protests,” she said. ”

The locals are still saying that the blockade will continue until their demands are met.”

A tripartite agreement was reached between Loknath Poudyal, Chief Administrative Officer of Kathmandu Metropolitan City, Haridatta Kandel, Chief Administrative Officer of Dhunibensi municipality and Rabindra Bohora, Director of Bancharedanda Garbage Management Project. The tripartite commitment was signed in the presence of Urban Development Minister Ram Kumari Jhankri, KMC Mayor Balendra Sah and Deputy Mayor Sunita Dangol.

However, the agreement reached on Monday evening to dump the garbage piled in Bancharedanda was broken the very next day.

The garbage in Kathmandu had not been disposed of for about two weeks.

Mithumaya Tamang, vice-chairperson of Kakani rural municipality, said that the locals obstructed the garbage disposal since they were uninformed of the tripartite decision to allow the dumping of garbage in Bancharedanda.

The Bancharedanda landfill site project was started 17 years ago on the condition that the construction will be completed in three years.
