Four bodies recovered, 27,671 kg garbage collected from mountains, including Everest



KATHMANDU: The Safa Himal Abhiyan (Clean Mountains Campaign) has collected 27,671 kg of garbage and four bodies from the mountains, including Mt Everest.

The campaign was launched under the leadership of the Nepal Army last month with the objective of collecting and bringing 35,000 kg of garbage and four bodies from the mountains.

However, more than 27,000 kg of garbage has been collected so far.

The garbage collection campaign has been carried out from Lhotse, Pumori, Amadablam, Makalu, and Dhaulagiri mountains including the world’s highest peak Mt Everest under the management of the National Parks and Wildlife Reserve Directorate in collaboration with the concerned bodies including the Department of Tourism under the Ministry of Forest and Environment and the Ministry of Tourism.

Among the collected, around 12 thousand 995 kg of garbage has been handed over for waste management or reuse.

Three thousand 188 kg of garbage was collected from the base camp of Mt Everest, one thousand 270 kg from Camp 1; 6 thousand 381 kg from Camp 2; 602 kg from Camp 3, and 615 kg from Camp 4.

According to the team, two bodies were recovered from Dhaulagiri and two from Mount Everest.

69 Sherpas and 43 Nepal Army personnel have participated in the cleanup campaign. A budget of Rs 125.5 million was allocated for the campaign.
