KATHMANDU: The Kathmandu Metropolitan City (KMC) has said it would take one more week to collect all garbage from the Kathmandu Valley. The garbage collection was halted for 18 days, emanating stench and littering the atmosphere.
The garbage management kicked off today. Although the weather was clear for workers to collect the waste, it would take one more week to clear the litter.
On Tuesday, the joint meeting of KMC Mayor Bidya Sundar Shakya, Chief District Officer in Kathmandu, Kali Prasad Rijal, the Director-General at Department of Roads, and the Senior Superintendent of Police had decided to resume the garbage collection.
Mayor Shakya said only KMC was not responsible for the management of the garbage. All sides’ support is imperative, he added.
The garbage collection was halted due to obstruction by the people from Sisdol area and damage to the road caused by incessant rainfall. Environment department chief at KMC, Hari Kumar Shrestha, said a discussion was held to solve the problems of the Sisdol people. Sisdol has a landfill site.
It is said some 15,000 metric tons of waste is piled at different places of Kathmandu Valley.
