NHRC urges govt to accelerate COVID-19 tests through PCR

KATHMANDU: The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has urged the government to use the Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) method for COVID-19 tests.

Issuing a statement on Friday, the constitutional human rights body requested the government to carry out more PCR tests and expedite contact tracing stating that Rapid Diagnostic Tests are not trustworthy.

NHRC has further stated that its attention has been drawn toward a low number of tests carried out in many places.

In a separate context, it said that during the monitoring the commission found out that lockdown has not been fully implemented and people have been left marooned in some places.

“It has been found that the lockdown has not been fully implemented. People, especially from Katmandu, are moving to home districts forming a crowd, local markets are running in some Terai districts. This could risk increasing infection,” reads the statement.
