KATHMANDU: The main opposition party Nepali Congress (NC) has welcomed the government’s decision to withdraw the ordinances the latter introduced four days before.
Issuing a press release on behalf of the party, NC Spokesperson Bishwo Prakash Sharma has welcomed the decision to withdraw the widely criticized ordinances.
“The government has made the correction of the mistake committed by introducing the regressive ordinances in time,” Spokesperson Sharma has said, “However, no immunity should be given to those involved in the kidnap-like incident of bringing a Madhesi member of parliament from Terai to Kathmandu.”
Similarly, Sharma, in his tweet, has appealed Prime Minister KP Oli to concentrate on curbing coronavirus pandemic.
“Let’s save the life of people first, the political disputes can be continued after curbing the common enemy,” Sharma has tweeted.
After the wide criticism from the opposition parties, his own party and civil society alike, Friday’s meeting of Council of Ministers decided to withdraw the ordinances introduced four days before.
Earlier, while speaking to his party members, PM Oli had tried to defend the ordinances saying they were not directed to anything inside the ruling party.
The government had introduced two ordinances, one making room for the split of political parties and another weakening the Constitutional Council by making it function without the representation of the main opposition party.
President Bidya Devi Bhandari, who was criticized for her ‘hasty’ seal on the ordinances, has revoked the ordinances on Friday.
