KATHMANDU: The government has barred people from leaving their homes for one week starting on Tuesday.

A meeting of COVID-19 Prevention and Control Coordination Committee led by Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Defense held on Monday decided not to let people come out of their homes except in case of emergency.

The restrictions will come into effect from 6 am on Tuesday till 6 am on March 31.

Speaking at a press meet organized to make public the decisions, DPM and Minister for Defense Ishwor Pokharel said that those not following the direction will face punitive action as per Infectious Disease Act, 2020 BS.

As per the act, those defying the government’s directive will be jailed for one month, fined Rs 100 or both.

The government announced such strict measures to combat an outbreak of COVID-19 pandemic that will be enforced throughout the country for one week starting tomorrow after a new case of coronavirus was confirmed in Kathmandu.
