KATHMANDU:  With the Indian Premier League (IPL) underway in the United Arab Emirates, the activities of illegal online betting have increased in the Kathmandu valley, of late.

A police team from Metropolitan Police Circle, Kalimati has arrested six people including three Indian nationals on the charge of operating illegal online IPL betting.

Such kind of betting is illegal in Nepal.

The arrested are Kuldeep Sharan from India, currently staying at Hotel Konark Inn, Kamal Pokhari, Snjeev Sharan, Pradeep Ghimire from Sindhupalchowk, Ajaya Gautam from India, Kanpur, currently staying at Kuleshwor, Uttam Sapkota from Kathmandu, Kuleshwor and Anil Bansal from Soltimod, Kathmandu.

Police have seized mobile sets, motorcycles, scooters along with Rs 185,120 in cash from their possession, informed SSP Shyam Lal Gyawali.

Kuldeep is the kingpin behind the cricket betting racket in Nepal, according to DSP Apil Raj Bohara of Metropolitan Police Circle, Kalimati.

“This group has been involved in such illegal betting activities since the last one and a half years,” said Bohara.

Businessmen and people from elite class are involved in such IPL bettings. They have been doing IPL betting online. According to Bohara, a laptop, television, mobile phones and a notebook are required to operate online betting.
