KATHMANDU: Acting Mayor of Kathmandu Metropolitan City (KMC) Sunita Dangol has said that separate drainage systems for sewage and rainwater will be developed in the Maitighar Mandala area as part of a long-term solution to the recurring flooding problem during the monsoon season.
Speaking to RSS, Dangol said the existing drainage system is unable to handle the excess load during periods of heavy rainfall.
“At present, in most places, sewage and rainwater flow through the same drainage system, which becomes ineffective during unusually heavy rain,” she said.
Dangol said KMC is working on both immediate and long-term measures and emphasized the need for a comprehensive master plan for areas that are repeatedly affected by flooding.
“For a sustainable solution, it is essential to manage sewage and rainwater through separate systems,” she said, adding that investment in such infrastructure should be increased through coordination among the concerned agencies.
Stating that the old drainage network can no longer meet current demands due to rapid urban expansion, she stressed the importance of developing a modern storm-water drainage system with a long-term perspective.
Dangol also said that haphazard land encroachment within Kathmandu Metropolitan City has contributed to the frequent occurrence of such flooding problems.
