Kidneys filter and excrete waste products in the bloodstream. They also maintain the body’s overall fluid balance. They release hormones to make red blood cells, regulate blood pressure and ensure bone health.

But it can become overburdened or even sustain damage.

Many foods can damage the kidneys, even known as healthy ones. Make sure not to overdo it on any of these seven foods.

Nuts

Nuts cannot be a good snack if you are prone to kidney stones. Nuts contain oxalates that are also found in the common type of kidney stone. If you’ve had kidney stones in the past, avoid nuts. Choose a variety of greens, instead.

Avocados

Avocados contain a high dose of potassium, which controls pH level, fluids, and electrolyte balance. Kidneys depend on the right balance of sodium and potassium for their prober job. Too much of potassium will spell trouble.

Caffeine

Caffeine, soda, and energy drinks are dangerous if you have issues with kidneys. Long-term consumption of caffeine can worsen chronic kidney disease.

Diuretic found in caffeine affects the kidneys’ ability to absorb water.

Dairy Products

Dairy products such as cheese, milk, or yogurt are loaded with calcium that increases the level of calcium in the urine. This, too, has been linked with risk of kidney stones.

Salt

Sodium along with potassium maintains fluid balance in a human body. It is crucial for the proper functioning of kidneys. Too much of sodium causes kidneys to retain water to dilute the salt in the bloodstream and places a burden on them.

Too much of salt intake raises blood pressure. It can damage the kidneys’ nephrons and the microscopic structures.

Meat

Meat contains protein, which is important for growth processes. However, animal-based proteins increase the risk of kidney stones.

Artificial sweeteners

Do not rely on artificial sweeteners in a bid to reduce sugar consumption. This will not do your body any favors. Just two diet sodas a day will cause a decline in kidney function. (Agencies)
