KATHMANDU: The third edition of the Nepal Premier League (NPL) is set to begin today (Monday), with the Tribhuvan University International Cricket Ground in Kirtipur decorated ahead of the tournament.
The Cricket Association of Nepal (CAN) briefed the media on preparations for the competition on Sunday. The third edition of the NPL is expected to generate economic transactions worth approximately Rs 1.5 billion.
The winning team will receive Rs 15 million in prize money, while the runners-up will take home Rs 8 million. The teams finishing third and fourth will receive Rs 4 million and Rs 3 million, respectively.
This edition will introduce a review system, allowing players to challenge umpiring decisions they disagree with. For leg-before-wicket (LBW) decisions, 3D ball-tracking technology will be used, while edge-detection and sound-wave technology will help determine whether the ball has made contact with the bat.
Following approval from the International Cricket Council (ICC), all matches in this edition will receive official T20 recognition. As a result, players’ runs and wickets will be recorded in official international statistics.
Spectator stands and floodlights were installed at the TU Cricket Ground before the previous edition. Additional facilities and structures for spectators are expected to further enhance the tournament experience this year.
Eight franchise teams will compete for the title: defending champions Lumbini Lions, Sudurpashchim Royals, Kathmandu Gurkhas, Biratnagar Kings, Pokhara Avengers, Janakpur Bolts, Chitwan Rhinos and Karnali Yaks.
