KATHMANDU: The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has held discussion with the Election Commission (EC) regarding the voting right to the migrant workers. On the occasion, NHRC Chairman Anupraj Sharma argued that human rights and periodic elections are the soul of democracy.
It is the responsibility of the government and EC to protect the voting right of millions of migrants, he added. Sharma was of the view that the process to ensure voting right to the migrants should be advanced by studying the experiences of different countries.
Likewise, EC Chief Commissioner Dinesh Kumar Thapaliya said that EC was seriously working for the amendment to the Election Act by considering the mandamus of the Supreme Court, recommendations of the NHRC and report of a taskforce. Meanwhile, the NHRC has carried out a monitoring of the only international airport of the country on the occasion of the International Day of Migrants.
NHRC Member Sudip Pathak-led team visited different desks at the Tribhuwan International Airport. The NHRC team took stock of the process adopted at the airport, immigration, problems facing the migrant workers during their departures and others.
