74th UNGA kicks off from today

KATHMANDU: The 74th General Assembly of the United Nations (UN) is taking place at the UN Headquarters in New York from today.

This year’s main agenda of the UNGA discussions is – Galvanizing Multilateral Efforts for Poverty Eradication, Quality Education, Climate Action and Inclusion.

A week-long high-level meetings will take place under the General Assembly focusing on a global health concern, investment for development, a high-level political forum for sustainable development, addressing the priorities of developing and small island nations, and a review of their progress.

The meetings will also discuss the periodic evaluation of the Millennium Development Goals, climate change, investment for development, and the concerns of under-developed countries, disarmament, human rights, global security situation, and international peace.

Meanwhile, Minister for Foreign Affairs, Pradeep Gyawali is leaving for New York on September 21 to participate in the UNGA leading a 12-member high-level delegation that includes Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Health and Population, Upendra Yadav; Minister for Forests and Environment Shakti Bahadur Basnet, among others.

Foreign Minister Gyawali is scheduled to address the 74th UNGA on September 30.
