Govt instructs MoFA to file candidacy for UNSC non-permanent seat

KATHMANDU: The Government of Nepal has decided to file its candidacy for a non-permanent seat at the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) for the 2037-38 term.

Government spokesperson Gokul Baskota informed that the government has instructed the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MoFA) to file the candidacy for the UNSC non-permanent seat for 2037-38 term.

Informing about the recent cabinet decision on Thursday, Baskota said that the government has instructed the MoFA to initiate lobbying to secure the non-permanent seat at the UNSC.

According to observers, the government has to initiate an arduous campaign at the regional and international arena to secure Nepal’s non-permanent seat at the UNSC.

Nepal has served twice in the UNSC as an elected non-permanent member — in 1969-70 and in 1988-1989.
