Parliamentary committee removes ‘controversial’ provisions from Media Council Bill

KATHMANDU: The Legislation Committee of the Parliament has decided to remove provisions related to punishment from the Media Council Bill.

The Committee has also decided to endorse it for further discussion in the full House.

According to Committee Chairman Parshuram Meghi Gurung, the proposed council will only be authorized to recommend action.

It should be noted that the government had earlier proposed a fine from Rs 25,000 to Rs one million for media, journalists, and publishers for violating the proposed law.
