Public officials’ integrity is vital for good governance

LALITPUR: Chairperson of the State Affairs and Good Governance Committee, Hari Dhakal, has stressed the need for greater discipline and reform in political leadership to strengthen good governance.

Addressing the National Governance Summit organized by the Good Governance Protection Forum in Lalitpur on Sunday, Dhakal said citizens are the source and strength of governance and that government functioning must remain citizen-centered.

He said the undue dominance of people holding positions of power cannot establish good governance.

Dhakal emphasized that officials and institutions responsible for promoting good governance must remain disciplined and committed to their responsibilities. He also highlighted the role of citizens in reminding those entrusted with legislative responsibilities to perform their duties within the framework of the rule of law and institutional discipline.

Vice-Chairperson of the National Planning Commission, Dr. Gunakar Bhatta, said the 16th Periodic Plan has given priority to good governance, social justice, and prosperity, while emphasizing the need to increase production and productivity.

He said Nepal must address challenges such as climate change, food security, and brain drain, and pursue the Sustainable Development Goals through the integration of digital governance and the digital economy.

Chairperson of the NGO Federation, Arjun Bhattarai, said the summit’s focus on digital governance was timely and significant. He argued that good governance would remain difficult to achieve without citizens’ participation in and ownership of public policies and lawmaking processes.
