WASHINGTON: The US Department of State has revoked more than 100,000 visas, including approximately 8,000 student visas and 2,500 specialized visas, as part of ongoing efforts to enforce immigration laws and bolster domestic security.
In a post on X (formerly Twitter), the Department said the revocations targeted individuals who had encounters with US law enforcement for criminal activity.
“BREAKING: The State Department has now revoked over 100,000 visas, including some 8,000 student visas and 2,500 specialised visas for individuals who had encounters with U.S. law enforcement for criminal activity,” the post read.
The department emphasized that visa revocations and deportations are key tools to safeguard national security. “We will continue to deport these thugs to keep America safe,” the Department added.
This move reflects ongoing efforts to ensure compliance with US immigration laws, highlighting that visa holders must adhere strictly to all legal requirements while in the country.
Recently, the US Embassy in India warned visa holders, particularly students, that violating US laws could result in visa revocation and deportation. “Breaking U.S. laws can have serious consequences for your student visa. If you are arrested or violate any laws, your visa may be revoked, you may be deported, and you could be ineligible for future U.S. visas. Follow the rules and don’t jeopardize your travel. A U.S. visa is a privilege, not a right,” the Embassy posted on January 7.
