KMC holding scholarship exam today with 16,137 students vying for seats

KATHMANDU: The Kathmandu Metropolitan City (KMC) is conducting its scholarship entrance examination for Grade 11 students today, with 16,137 candidates taking part.

The exam is scheduled from 8 AM to 10 AM on Saturday and is aimed at selecting deserving students for scholarships in institutional schools for the academic year 2025/26.

Applications were open from June 25, during which KMC received 17,929 applications from students across all 77 districts of Nepal.

However, 1,092 applications were rejected due to missing documents, such as proof of citizenship or birth certificate, proof of public school education, previous scholarship status in institutional schools, or residency documentation in Kathmandu.

Of the eligible students, 11,590 are competing for spots in the science stream, 4,164 in management, 32 in humanities, 95 in education, and 256 in law.

The exam will follow a Grade 10-level curriculum and consist of 100 multiple-choice questions: 30 each in compulsory mathematics, science, and English, and 10 from general knowledge. Students must score at least 40% to qualify.

According to the KMC Education Department, scholarships will be awarded strictly on merit. The initiative is designed to offer talented students from financially disadvantaged backgrounds access to quality education in institutional schools of their choice.

Last year, 3,801 students were awarded scholarships out of 12,000 applicants. With a nearly 30% increase in applications this year, the city expects to provide scholarships to at least 3,500 students, depending on available seats in partner schools.
