PM Oli: Keep politics out of sports

KATHMANDU: Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli has called on all stakeholders to refrain from politicizing the sports sector.

Speaking at the inauguration of the newly constructed National High Performance Centre and Sports Science Lab at the International Sports Complex in Satdobato, Lalitpur, he emphasized that while political leaders may represent the government, the sports field must remain free of political interference. He urged those involved in sports to focus solely on its development rather than political agendas.

Prime Minister Oli also instructed concerned authorities to begin preparations for the Nepal Premier League, calling it a matter of national pride. He stressed that the Ministry of Sports, the National Sports Council, and the Cricket Association of Nepal must all coordinate to ensure its successful execution.

Criticizing the repeated postponement of the National Games, the Prime Minister called it shameful and directed that the games must be held by Mangsir 2082 BS under any circumstance.

He further announced plans to build stadiums with a capacity of 50,000 spectators in Bhaktapur and Jhapa, and to expand the Kirtipur stadium in multiple phases. He claimed that the current government is serious about the development of the sports sector, and as evidence, the budget for sports has been doubled for the upcoming fiscal year.

The National Sports Council constructed the new high-performance lab to enhance athlete training and performance. According to the council, the facility can accommodate training for over a hundred athletes at once.
