Minister Khadka calls for global collective efforts to address water-energy-food crisis

KATHMANDU: Minister for Energy, Water Resources and Irrigation Deepak Khadka has called for enhanced global cooperation to address the water-energy-food crisis in a sustainable manner.

Minister Khadka emphasized collective efforts to tackle the impact of climate change on water, energy and irrigation sector as well as socio-economic challenges at the International Soil and Water Forum organized by the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) in Bangkok, Thailand today.

Khadka highlighted the need for enhanced cooperation, knowledge and cooperation exchange to promote best practices and technological progresses in water management, according to Minister Khadka’s Secretariat.

In the Conference that kicked off today, Khadka outlined the need for a high-level action-plan to halt and reverse soil degradation and water scarcity.

Stating that agriculture sector was mainstay of Nepal’s economy, he reaffirmed his commitment to roll out a sustainable plan integrating science, innovation, existing best practices and policies towards a sustainable and resilient agriculture food system.

Informing the attendees about Nepal’s ambitious target to produce 28,500 mega watt of electricity as of 2035, he voiced his concern over the receding ice-sheet and melting of snow in the Himalayas of the country due to climate change.

Delegates including policymakers, development practitioners, technical experts among others from over two dozen countries including Nepal, Thailand, Iceland, Pakistan, Cambodia, Bhutan and Chile among others are participating in the three-day conference.
