SC orders authority to produce Durga Prasai in habeas corpus case

KATHMANDU: The Supreme Court (SC) has issued an order to produce medical entrepreneur Durga Prasai  before the SC.

A bench led by Justice Manoj Kumar Sharma issued the order in connection with a writ petition for habeas corpus.

The court has also issued a show cause order against the defendant, Durga Prasai.

The writ petition was filed by his son, Nirajan Prasai, on Friday.

The Ministry of Home Affairs, Police Headquarters Naxal, Central Investigation Bureau (CIB) Lazimpat, and Kathmandu District Court have been named as defendants in the case.

Durga Prasai was arrested by the CIB from his residence in Bhaktapur last week.

The arrest was made in connection with an investigation under Section 47 of the Electronic Transactions Act, 2063. The police are also preparing to investigate him for other potential offenses.

The arrest follows a controversial statement made by Prasai, in which he accused Prime Minister KP Oli of investing Rs 32.5 billion in Cambodian Telecom.

He had shared unverified ‘screenshots’ of the claim in videos posted on his social media.
