Govt to proceed with ADB loan for drinking water project, forms negotiation team

KATHMANDU: The government has decided to move ahead with negotiations to secure a concessional loan from the Asian Development Bank for an integrated drinking water supply and sewerage management project.

According to government spokesperson and Minister for Education, Science and Technology Sasmit Pokharel, Thursday’s Cabinet meeting decided to form a negotiation team led by a joint secretary from the Ministry of Finance to finalise the financial agreement and related documents for the USD 115 million assistance package.

The loan is expected to support infrastructure development in drinking water supply and sanitation services across targeted urban areas.

In another decision, the Cabinet revoked an earlier decision made on August 17, 2018, which had transferred 114 ropani and 3 aana of land of the National Police Training Academy at Maharajgunj to the President’s Office. The government has now decided that the land will continue to be used by the training academy.

Similarly, the meeting also decided to form a study taskforce under the coordination of the Information and Communication Technology Advisor to review software systems and information technology being used in government agencies.

Officials said the decisions aim to improve infrastructure efficiency and strengthen institutional management across key government sectors.
