Pandey and Niraula unanimously endorsed as SC judges

KATHMANDU: The Parliamentary Hearing Committee has unanimously approved the appointments of two proposed judges for the Supreme Court (SC).

The Committee, which convened at 11:00 am on Friday, confirmed the names of Judges Nripadhwaj Niraula and Nityananda Pandey following their hearings.

During the meeting, both proposed judges presented their action plans to the lawmakers.

After reviewing their plans, the committee approved their nominations as Supreme Court judges.

Originally scheduled for October 30, the hearing was delayed but proceeded on Friday.

The committee had issued a notice on October 1, inviting public complaints against the nominees.

Two complaints were filed against Judge Niraula, but after his hearing, his name was approved. In contrast, no complaints were filed against Judge Pandey.

Judge Niraula previously served as the Chief Justice of the Patan High Court, while Judge Pandey was the Chief Justice of the Tulsipur High Court.

It is expected that Niraula will ascend to the role of Chief Justice after being confirmed as a Supreme Court judge.

Niraula is expected to serve at the Supreme Court for at least 12 years, making him eligible for the position of Chief Justice.

He has been recommended to succeed Tek Prasad Dhungana as Chief Justice.
