Unruly 12,749 taxi drivers penalized: MTPD



KATHMANDU: Metropolitan Traffic Police Division (MTPD), Kathmandu has taken action against 12,749 taxi drivers for fleecing passengers in the Kathmandu Valley.

The MTPD penalized the taxi drivers for tampering with meter box, failing to comply with meter system and charging unreasonable fare among others in the fiscal year 2018/2019.

A total of 8,120 taxi drivers faced action in the fiscal year 2017/18. The Division has been taking action against 40 to 50 unscrupulous taxi drivers on a daily basis, said SSP Basanta Kumar Panta, chief of the Division.

Traffic police fines a taxi driver Rs 3,000 for charging unreasonable fare and those who face actions for five times for the same cause will be stripped of their driving licenses.

The MTPD has urged the passengers to call at hotline 103 if the taxi drivers did not want to ferry them to the desired destination, tampered with the meter box, and charged them unreasonably.

Over 10,000 taxis are in operation in the Kathmandu Valley, according to MTPD.
