DAMAK: A photo exhibition has been organized at Damak, Jhapa today to educate the public about the life experiences of Bhutanese refugees.

The event was organized by the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) and Damak Municipality and it will go through April 11.

UNHCR Nepal’s Spokesperson Roshan Nepal shared that the exhibition aimed to illustrate the history of refugees in Nepal and the efforts of the government of Nepal and donor agencies to protect and promote the human rights of the refugees besides enlightening the general public about life experiences of the refugees.

The exhibition being held in the premises of Damak Municipality displays photos of the Bhutanese refugees living in Nepal.

The organizers expect that the exhibition will shed light on the hopes and challenges facing the Bhutanese refugees as well as the efforts of the humanitarian communities in Nepal.

Over 107,000 Bhutanese refugees were living in different camps at Beldangi of Damak-3 in Jhapa and Patharisanischare in Morang district.

Among them, 100,000 Bhutanese refugees were resettled in countries including the USA since the Third Country Resettlement Program was initiated by the UNHCR and other donor agencies in 2007.

At present, there are 6,500 Bhutanese refugees in the camps in Morang and Jhapa districts.
