Sundhara drainage blocked for 25 years reopened

KATHMANDU: Kathmandu Metropolitan City (KMC) has reopened a drainage system in Sundhara that had remained blocked for the past 25 years.

The drainage outlet, located near the Jayabageshwori Temple in the Pashupati area, was restored as part of efforts to revive its original and traditional structure.

Ward No. 8 Chair Ashaman Sangat said the drainage was reopened on the morning of December 25 after continuous work carried out during the nights of December 21 and 24.

According to Sangat, the stone water spout dates back to the Lichchhavi era and represents an important example of ancient water management systems.

“The original structure was large enough for people to enter and clean it. However, with the installation of drinking water supply pipelines, the traditional drainage system was damaged and eventually blocked,” Sangat said, adding that the outlet had remained obstructed for nearly 25 years due to pipe placement.

The drainage was successfully reopened after identifying a stretch of around 60 meters at a depth of 9 to 12 feet.

Sangat, who also coordinates the Metropolitan City Heritage and Tourism Committee, said the restoration is not merely about water flow but about preserving the identity of Newar civilization and reviving a living example of ancient engineering.
