Nepal Embassy in UAE urges legal action against manpower company for stranding migrant workers

KATHMANDU: The Embassy of Nepal in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) has taken a decisive step by recommending legal actions against Mechi International Overseas Private Limited, a manpower company in Nepal, for allegedly leaving 19 Nepali nationals stranded in the UAE.

In a letter addressed to the Department of Foreign Employment in Tahachal, the embassy highlighted the plight of these Nepali migrant workers who were promised employment in the UAE but were subsequently left without proper salaries, services, or job placements upon their arrival.

Among those stranded are individuals from various districts of Nepal, including Parshu Ram Rai and Raj Kumar Rai of Khotang, Babishya GC of Durkhet, Devsing Sunari of Palpa, Sunil Shrestha of Nawalparasi, Man Bahadur Shahi of Dailekh, Tilak Bahadur Sunar of Dhading, and Manoj Tharu of Kapilvastu, among others.

These workers were assured monthly salaries ranging from 1,100 to 1,200 dirhams. However, upon their arrival in the UAE, they faced exploitation and were left in dire circumstances.

According to the victims, they had paid exorbitant sums ranging from Rs 190,000 to Rs 220,000 per person to the agents facilitating their employment in the UAE.

The Department of Foreign Employment had previously summoned the manpower company for clarification on March 19, seeking a written response regarding the allegations.
