Monsoon withdrawal from Nepal expected around Oct 2

KATHMANDU: The average date for the withdrawal of the monsoon from Nepal is October 2. However, as this is an average date, the monsoon does not necessarily withdraw from the country on the exact date and may retreat a few days earlier or later.

According to the Weather Forecasting Division, monitoring and analysis of the monsoon withdrawal are currently underway.

The Division said the monsoon will gradually begin withdrawing from the western part of the country and that a bulletin on the withdrawal will be issued soon.

According to the Division, the monsoon does not withdraw from the entire country simultaneously. It gradually retreats from the western region before withdrawing from the eastern parts of the country.

Even after the monsoon begins withdrawing from the western areas, it may take several days for it to completely withdraw from the entire country, the Division said.

The average date for the onset of the monsoon in Nepal is June 13. This year, however, the monsoon entered Nepal through Koshi Province on June 19, six days later than the average date, and gradually spread across the country, reaching Sudurpashchim Province on June 30.

During the monsoon season, Nepal is primarily influenced by monsoon winds from the east. After the monsoon withdraws, the influence of westerly winds gradually increases. With the monsoon season nearing its end, the influence of westerly winds has already begun increasing in the western part of the country.

Following the complete withdrawal of the monsoon, Nepal enters the post-monsoon season, which generally lasts through October and November. Winter begins in December and continues through February.

The pre-monsoon season begins in March and lasts through May, continuing until the onset of the monsoon.

Meteorologists generally classify Nepal’s weather into four seasons: pre-monsoon, monsoon, post-monsoon and winter.
