KATHMANDU: Minister for Forest and Environment, Dr. Birendra Prasad Mahato, expressed satisfaction with Nepal’s participation in the UN climate summit, COP28, stating that the event has been fruitful for the country.

Minister Mahato emphasized that Nepal’s issues were given priority in the COP28 discussions, marking a significant achievement for the country. “This time, we presented ourselves through a one-door system. As a result, our voices have become more vibrant,” he asserted, underscoring the effectiveness of Nepal’s representation at the summit.

The COP28 conference, which commenced on November 30 and extends until December 12, provided a platform for global discussions on climate-related challenges and solutions. Minister Mahato noted that the heightened prioritization of Nepal’s agendas was a result of United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres’ visit to Nepal on the eve of COP28.

With Nepal having its own pavilion at the summit, Minister Mahato highlighted the country’s opportunity to engage in meaningful deliberations and interactions on issues related to climate change. He actively participated in various events, including addressing the ministerial-level program organized by the Asian Development Bank on December 3. Additionally, he spoke at the ‘Launching Melamchi Disaster Damage Assessment Report’ program held on the same day.

Minister Mahato informed that more than 14 sideline events are scheduled to be held in the Nepali pavilion in the coming days, showcasing Nepal’s commitment to addressing climate challenges and contributing to global discussions.

As COP28 progresses, Nepal’s active participation and the positive outcomes reported by Minister Mahato reflect the country’s dedication to advancing its climate agenda on the global stage.
