KATHMANDU: The Law, Justice, and Human Rights Committee of the House of Representatives resolved to seek an explanation from Home Minister Narayankaji Shrestha regarding the revocation of the President’s pardons granted on Constitution Day.

During a meeting held at Singha Durbar on Monday, the committee decided to request Deputy Prime Minister and Home Minister Narayankaji Shrestha’s clarification regarding the clemency granted by President Ram Chandra Paudel on the recommendation of the Council of Ministers during Constitution Day.

President Paudel’s clemency decision has faced widespread criticism, as the government is accused of granting immunity to criminals under the pretext of democracy, even for those who have committed serious crimes.

Committee Chairperson Bimala Subedi stated that, taking into account the Home Minister’s schedule, he will be summoned before the committee. Additionally, the committee plans to inquire about the conditions in juvenile correctional facilities.

She mentioned, “We are currently discussing the possibility of calling the Home Minister before the committee to address the issues concerning juvenile correctional facilities. Following our discussions, we intend to conduct an on-site inspection. We will schedule a meeting as soon as the Home Minister’s availability allows.”

During the committee meeting, Mahesh Bartaula, a committee member, expressed his outrage over the President’s pardons for individuals serving sentences for murder, asserting that the Home Minister had misused the law.
