KATHMANDU: Banking offenses in the Kathmandu district have witnessed a staggering rise lately.
According to the District Police Range, Kathmandu, there were 7,101 cases of banking offenses recorded in the fiscal year 2022/23, compared to 3,715 cases in the fiscal year 2021/22.
SSP Dan Bahadur Karki, Chief of District Police Range, Kathmandu, revealed that these cases have nearly doubled over the two years.
Alongside this concerning surge in banking offenses, the district has also seen an increase in theft cases.
In the fiscal year 2022/23, 647 theft cases were reported, up from 368 cases in the fiscal year 2021/22.
However, the cases of murders have shown a decline, decreasing from 37 in the fiscal year 2021/22 to 27 in the fiscal year 2022/23, according to police data.
In the last fiscal year, there were a total of 368 cases registered for the abuse of narcotic drugs or illegal sales and distribution of narcotics within Kathmandu.
Additionally, the police recorded 341 cases of suicide in the same period.
SSP Karki acknowledged that the police have faced challenges in combating crime and criminal activities due to the malfunctioning of many CCTV cameras installed in Kathmandu.
Out of the 1,077 CCTV cameras installed under the scope of the District Police Range, Kathmandu, only 532 are currently operative.
Despite the difficulties, authorities are determined to address these issues and enhance security measures to ensure the safety of citizens and reduce criminal activities in the district.
