KATHMANDU: The Press Council Nepal (PCN) has urged all media and social media users to not spread disinformation in a way that affects investigation.

Issuing a press release, the media content regulatory body said misleading information and disinformation were being spread on YouTube and Facebook in the unfolding incidents in Nepal.

Council’s attention is drawn toward the misinformation that has the capacity to assassinate the character of political leaders, organizations, political parties and individuals.

“It is a sheer deviation from journalistic code and standard to disseminate information without quoting reliable source and verification of information which dents truth,” said the statement signed by Deputy Administrative Officer, Ram Sharan Bohara.

The Council has been receiving a slew of complaints on contents spread on media and social networking sites, Bohara said, reminding everyone that the spread of baseless information invokes action as per Section 4 (c.f) and 5 (k) of the Journalists’ Code of Conduct, 2073 (first amendment 2076).
