Lightning and thunderstorm kill five, injure 43 in a month

KATHMANDU: Forty-four incidents of lighting were reported in the country in a month and they resulted in the deaths of five and injuries to 40.

According to the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority, 44 incidents of lightning took place in the country between April 14 and May 15 with five casualties.

Four people of the same family were injured in lighting in Dailekh last night.

Meteorologist Govinda Jha said thundershowers continue to take place in hilly districts and in this situation, it is necessary for the people to be aware of potential consequences and take necessary precautions.

According to him, lighting is likely to occur in hilly areas of Bagamati, Koshi, Gandaki, and Karnali provinces today. Lighting incidents are highly likely during the pre-monsoon season.

Authority executive chief Anil Pokhrel urges people to avoid farm work and to stay indoors or safe places to remain safe during thunderstorms. Three months ahead pose a high risk for lighting, the Authority said.
