KATHMANDU: Nepali Congress (NC) General Secretary Bishwaprakash Sharma has opposed the ordinance brought by the government to grant amnesty to Resham Chaudhary, leader of Nagarik Unmukti Party, and others.

The government decided to bring an ordinance through the cabinet meeting on Sunday by adding sub-section 9 to section 116 of the Civil Criminal Procedure Code, 2074 to provide amnesty to the rebels.

Sharma protested the government’s move saying that it has introduced the ordinance without even having a close discussion within the party.

“What is true on the street is also true in Parliament,” Sharma wrote on social media, adding, “It is completely wrong not to take this issue for intensive discussions among the parties.”

The government on Sunday decided to issue an ordinance to revise the Criminal Code in a bid to clear all legal hurdles to grant amnesty to an individual convicted of a heinous crime.

Chaudhary is serving a life term in connection to the August 2015 Tikapur carnage in which eight people, including a toddler, were killed.

It should be noted that, in March 2019, the Kailali district court convicted Chaudhary of masterminding the incident

Likewise, the Dipayal High court upheld the district court’s decision in December 2020.
