Malawi elects the first woman speaker, Catherine Gotani Hara



LILONGWE: Hon Catherine Gotani Hara, a lawmaker with the main opposition Malawi Congress Party, MCP, has been elected speaker of the country’s parliament. She is the first woman speaker in history of the country.

She won a closely contested poll on Wednesday beating former first deputy speaker Esther Mcheka Chilenje. The ruling Democratic People’s Party, DPP, nominated Mcheka Chilenje, who is currently serving as Member of Parliament (MP) for the Nsanje North constituency.

A total of 190 MPs voted to elect the next speaker and two deputies. The speaker must be the member of the house in order to be elected as the speaker. Newly elected speaker Gotani Hari replaces Karonga Nyungwe Richard Msowoya who also belonged to the main opposition Malawi Congress Party (MCP). (Agencies)
