UN warns Myanmar junta of ‘severe consequences’

NEW YORK: The UN has warned Myanmar’s junta there would be “severe consequences” for the brutal suppression of the anti-coup protests in the country.

UN Special Envoy Christine Schraner Burgener has said that “the right of peaceful assembly must fully be respected”.

Meanwhile, access to the internet in Myanmar has been restored on Tuesday morning after it had been cut off for a second night, BBC reported.

The Myanmar military has been blocking the web to try to stifle dissent since the 1 February coup, the report said.

Schraner Burgener gave the warning during a phone call on Monday with the junta’s deputy head Soe Win, a UN spokesperson said.

The UN Special Envoy also emphasized that internet blackouts “undermine core democratic principles”.

Myanmar has seen several days of protests following a military coup which saw the military overthrow elected leaders, including democracy campaigner, Aung San Suu Kyi, due to alleged voter fraud.
