SUDURPASCHIM: Gagan Kumar Thapa, president of the Nepali Congress, has said his party will extend full support to the government on issues related to nationalism and national interest.
Addressing a Sudurpaschim Province-level gathering focused on provincial and local governments in Dhangadi on Saturday, Thapa said the Congress would cooperate with the government in matters concerning governance reform, economic improvement, and national priorities. The program was organized by the party’s Central Policy, Research and Training Academy.
Thapa said the Nepali Congress has never differentiated between parties when it comes to national interest and would maintain the same approach toward the current government. However, he warned that the party would not accept actions that undermine the fundamental principles of democracy.
He stressed that democracy should value moral legitimacy alongside legal legitimacy.
Recalling a past political episode, Thapa said the Congress had once refrained from pursuing an impeachment motion against the then deputy speaker despite having sufficient numbers to influence decisions within the Constitutional Council.
He also instructed party leaders and cadres to abandon a “defeatist mindset” and actively engage in organizational responsibilities. Thapa added that leaders and cadres accused of working against party candidates during previous elections would temporarily remain outside key responsibilities.
Party Vice President Bishwo Prakash Sharma said the time had come for the Congress to move forward with renewed energy and a broader social vision.
General Secretary Gururaj Ghimire said the party would move ahead without prejudice and work toward strengthening organizational unity. He added that capable and loyal leaders who had previously been sidelined would receive proper recognition.
At the event, Sudurpaschim Province parliamentary party leader and Chief Minister Kamal Bahadur Shah emphasized the need for party unity and urged the leadership to ensure dignified recognition for senior leaders, including former party president Sher Bahadur Deuba.
The two-day gathering is expected to hold discussions with elected representatives from provincial and local levels on various organizational and governance-related issues.
