Army club obtains AFC cup club license



KATHMANDU: AFC cup club license provided by the Asian Football Confederation (AFC), the governing body of football in Asia, has been provided to Tribhuvan Army Football Club, the departmental football club of Nepali Army.

With this, the army club will have an opportunity to take part in professional football tournaments under the AFC cup club.

President of All Nepal Football Association Karma Tshering Sherpa handed the license to Chief Army Staff Purna Chandra Thapa amid a function today here at the army headquarters.

A meeting of the AFC Club Licensing Appeals Body on December 22 had decided to provide the license to the army club.

The army club is the first to obtain the AFC license although the ANFA has directed all ‘A’ division clubs of Nepal to go through the process to get it, it has been said.

Established in 1954 in Manila, Philippine with its headquarters in Malaysia, altogether 47 countries have been associated with the AFC.

On the occasion, member-secretary of the National Sports Council Ramesh Kumar Silwal said the army club having got the licence is a success in sports of the entire country.

Likewise, Army Major General Niranjan Shrestha said the army club having received the license has provided additional encouragement for the development of Nepal’s sports.
