11 Nepalis arrested in Gulf countries for spreading war rumors on social media

KATHMANDU: Eleven Nepali nationals have been arrested in several West Asian countries for sharing audio-visual content and images on social media that allegedly spread panic about a possible war involving Israel, the United States, and Iran.

The arrests were confirmed by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs during a press conference on Friday.

According to the Ministry, four individuals were detained in Saudi Arabia, three each in the United Arab Emirates and Qatar, and one in Oman. Authorities in these countries have strict laws prohibiting the sharing of images or videos of missile or drone attacks that could incite fear or spread misinformation.

Ministry spokesperson Lok Bahadur Poudel Chhetri said the individuals were arrested for violating such regulations by posting sensitive content online.

“We are coordinating with Nepali embassies and missions in the respective countries to obtain details about the detainees, including the charges against them and possible penalties,” Chhetri said. Efforts are also underway to explore possibilities for their release.

Addressing concerns about employment, the spokesperson stated that the situation has not significantly affected job security for Nepali workers in the Middle East. While there have been fears—particularly in sectors such as hospitality and tourism—official reports from Nepali missions indicate no widespread risk of job losses.

He added that the government is continuing efforts to assist Nepali citizens affected by the conflict and facilitate the return of those wishing to come home.

Regarding inquiries received through the ministry’s call center, Chhetri said many Nepalis have sought information about returning home and work permits. So far, 86,420 individuals have registered.

“The number of people reporting that they feel unsafe is gradually decreasing, and many are choosing to remain and continue working after conditions improve,” he noted, adding that the rescue of those in transit has largely been completed.
