High security alert in Sindhupalchowk as 6-magnitude quake poses further risk to landslides



KATHMANDU: The risk of landslides has further increased in Sindhupalchowk district after an earthquake of 6-magnitude struck with its epicenter at Ramche on Wednesday morning.

Ramche lies in Bahrabise municipality-9 in Sindhupalchowk near the place  where a deadly landslide occurred at ward no 7 of the municipality only four days ago.

Deputy mayor of Bahrabise municipality Sushila Pakhrin said the the earthquake had posed a further risk to landslides.

“We have alerted security personnel and the people living in the high-risk areas of landslides through telephones since early morning,” said Pakhrin.

Already hit by the reoccurring landslides, the risk of  landslides has further increased after the 6-magnitude aftershock hit Sindhupalchowk district on early morning today.

Pakhrin further said the  earthquake this morning, however, did not have much impact on the areas thanks to the facilies constructed more strongly following the mega earthquake in 2015.

Meanwhile, a high security alert has been maintained in the landslide-hit Sindhupalchowk to prevent any further untoward incidents since the epicenter lies here in this district.

Nepal Army, Nepal Police, and Armed Police Force have been kept in high alert about the possible landslides in the districts.

A powerful earthquake of 6-magnitude rocked the central Nepal this morning.

According to National Seismological Center, Lainchaur, the tremor was recorded at 5:19 am with its epicenter at Ramche of Sindhupalchowk.

The tremors were felt in central districts including Kavrepalanchowk, Sindhupalchowk, Ramechhap, Kathmandu, Lalitpur and Bhaktapur.

Human casualties and the properties damaged by the earthquake are yet to be reported.

Chief of the National Seismological Center, Lainchaur, Lok Bijaya Adhikari said it is the aftershock of the mega earthquake that hit Nepal five years ago.

As many as 548 sftershocks of 4 or above 4-magnitude have occurred since the Gorkha earthquake while those below 4 in magnitude are not recorded.

According to Adhikari, aftershocks of the Gorkha earthquake are expected to last up to 10 years.

Meanwhile, an another aftershock occurred with its epicenter at Ramche in Sindhupalchowk district at 6:10 am today.

A 7.8-magnitude earthquake had struck Nepal on April 25 in 2015, killing nearly 9,000 people and injuring more than 22,000 people.

The deadly earthquake toppled multi-story buildings in the Kathmandu Valley, the capital, and induced landslides and avalanches in the Himalayan mountains.
