KATHMANDU: Minister for Health and Food Safety Nisha Mehta has urged tobacco users to quit the habit, calling on them to take the first step toward a healthier life on the occasion of World No Tobacco Day 2026.
In her message marking the day, Minister Mehta appealed to all tobacco users to give up the consumption of tobacco products.
“It may be difficult to overcome tobacco addiction initially. However, quitting is entirely possible with strong willpower, family support, and guidance from health professionals,” she said.
The minister also urged the public not to adopt e-cigarettes, vapes, or other harmful substances in the name of modernization or fashion. She warned that such products contain nicotine and other toxic substances that pose serious health risks.
Mehta assured that the ministry would provide necessary support and counselling services to individuals seeking to quit tobacco use or vaping.
Describing tobacco consumption as a major public health challenge, she cited recent data showing that around 29 percent of Nepal’s population uses tobacco products. More than 39,000 people die each year in Nepal from tobacco-related illnesses, she noted, calling the figure a matter of serious concern.
The minister expressed concern over new marketing strategies adopted by tobacco companies, particularly those targeting adolescents and young people. She said the promotion of nicotine-containing products through social media, along with their availability in attractive flavours and modern packaging, has worsened the problem.
She urged tobacco manufacturers and marketers to be more responsible and called on all stakeholders to work together to discourage tobacco use.
Minister Mehta also stressed the need for the effective implementation of laws related to tobacco control and regulation to address the ongoing challenges posed by smoking and smokeless tobacco products.
World No Tobacco Day is being observed in Nepal and around the world under the theme, “Unmasking the Appeal: Countering Nicotine and Tobacco Addiction.”
